Skarn Associates goal is to support the mining and metals sectors in reducing their environmental impacts, by providing actionable strategic insight into energy use, GHG emissions, decarbonisation economics and water use. Based on our detailed asset level analysis of over 1,700 assets, development projects, smelters and refineries globally, including forecasts to 2030, we deliver deep insight into the interplay between mineral economics and environmental impacts. Our most recent launch, the Skarn Decarbonisation Quarterly, tracks global trends in decarbonising supply chains for key energy transition metals. Skarn Water provides unique benchmarking of water stewardship for 451 gold, 228 copper 387 silver and 100 zinc producing mines respectively, with development underway on nickel. As climate changes, water stewardship and increasing risk from drought and floods are becoming ever more significant. Our water research includes climate forecasts to 2030. Leading edge data, analysis, forecasts and consultancy from Skarn enable our clients to benchmark energy and emissions performance and: - analyse the proposed decarbonisation pathways of different companies, highlighting risks, timelines and costs - assess technological prospects such as fleet electrification and Power Purchase Agreements - understand the policies and standards which are driving change. Skarn’s senior team has immense experience, working for leading mining information businesses such as Wood Mackenzie, CRU, S&P Global and Thompson Reuters Refinitiv. Key personnel include Mark Fellows (Co-founder & CEO), Nick Morgan (Chairman), Sophie Chung (Director Strategy & Development), Raymond Philippe (Skarn Water), Rob Garlick (CFO), Martin Hollands (Director, Environment) and Kate Cummings (CCO). Metal Price Analytics Ltd’s (MPA’s) current focus is on the chrome concentrates price model that it has developed in early 2023 for SwapX Holdings (Pty) Ltd, shortly to be made available on license by SwapX. Chrome concentrates prices show strong inverse correlation with port stocks. Because of the strong causal link between stock levels and the market’s supply-demand balance, this will allow producers, traders and users both to quantify any short-term (current) price anomalies and to forecast quantitatively rather than just qualitatively the expected impact on prices of predicted surpluses or deficits. MPA’s Adam Sotowicz is undertaking the modelling, in discussion with SwapX’s Quintin Kieser, with insights also from Bloomsbury Minerals Economics’ Peter Hollands. Adam has experience of modelling prices over time frames from intra-day to several years ahead. MPA also has considerable background in modelling LME cash and forward prices for copper, nickel, aluminium, zinc, lead and tin. Adam would be happy to extend MPA’s modelling work into other raw materials: SHFE metals contracts, exchange traded rubber and any non-exchange traded ores and metals that have Chinese port stock series. The modelling work is done mainly in R or Python using regression splines along with other modelling techniques, such as time series analysis, glmnet, data visualisation and graphical analysis.
