Currently, the standard treatment for severe MR is open heart surgery. Globally there are more than 15 million Mitral Regurgitation patients, 4.5 million are suffering from severe MR. Only 2% of the 4.5 million severe MR patients undergo open heart surgery. The remaining 98% are sent home with drug therapy alone, resulting in nearly 50% of them dying within 2 years. The current available treatments for MR patients with heart failure are limited. Surgical repair and replacement are controversial, and new treatments are insufficient.
