As the demand for electricity continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, Xlinks is quite literally building towards the concept of one world, one grid’.
The sun is always shining and wind is always blowing somewhere, and thats why connecting centres of abundant supply to places of demand will prove crucial in the global Net Zero transition.
| About the Morocco - UK Power Project |
The strong trading relationship between Morocco and the UK goes back more than 200 years, and Xlinks will strengthen that even further.
The Project is aligned with Morocco’s plan to become a global green hub, unlocking renewable energy export potential to create huge economic and social value. Morocco recognises the value of the country’s wind and solar resources and have great ambition to export such renewable power to Europe.
The Project will realise this ambition and open an energy export relationship with Europe, at scale and at pace.
It will unlock income from the site lease for the Moroccan government; incremental export tax revenues; thousands of jobs, both permanent and temporary during the construction phase; and substantial industrial development through local procurement.
Xlinks’ Morocco-UK Power Project is ready to contribute to Great Britain’s ambitious clean power mission, providing 3.6GW of reliable, affordable energy to meet 8% of Great Britain’s current electricity needs - enough for 7 million homes - by the early 2030s. It will also reduce Britain’s power sector emissions by c.10% in its first year of operation.
This supply, dedicated to the UK, will come from a renewable power facility (the size of Greater London) in Morocco to designated National Grid connections in Devon.
It will help stabilise prices by displacing imported gas; diversify our energy supply; reduce wholesale prices; and generate £19.3bn of benefit to the UK in its first 25 years of operation.
