Danish Waste Association is a political interest organisation consisting of 53 members representing municipalities and inter-municipal waste management companies in Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Our members collect and handle household waste and commercial waste from all 98 municipalities with a total of 5.6 million citizens in Denmark. In the safeguarding of our members’ interests, the association aims to create the best possible framework conditions for execution of tasks, to promote cooperation, knowledge-sharing, dissemination of knowledge, and to qualify knowledge and information about new legislation and initiatives both nationally and in the EU. The aforementioned must be achieved in consideration of; security of energy supply for citizens and business community, optimal utilization of resources contained in waste including preservation and development of the municipal assets tied up in the waste sector, provision of a high service level for citizens and businesses with respect for the municipal decision-making power, an administratively simple waste regulation, and social responsibility. Odense Waste Management Company covers the Municipality of Odense, Denmark, with 190.000 inhabitants. We offer a wide range of solid waste management activities and solutions within a limited urban area and within one organisational set-up. Main activities are: - collection of household refuse, hazardous waste and recyclable paper from 82 000 households, - operation of 8 recycling stations, - about 150 bring banks for bottles, - street cleaning - operation of Odense Environmental Centre which comprises landfilling, sorting, recycling and composting activities as well as a Training Centre - extraction of landfill gas from the former Stige Island dumpsite, providing electricity via the public grid for about 5 000 households and heating via the district heating grid for about 900 households - closure and aftercare of the old dumpsite at Stige Island , including careful monitoring, collection and treatment of leachate. With roots more than a 100 years back it was in 1994 transformed from a municipal waste management department into a limited company owned by the municipality. It is a not-for-profit company, where all services are paid for by the users.
