Each year Carnegie Mellon students, staff and professors launch 20 β 30 startups. Many of these spin-offs are based on industry leading intellectual property developed on campus. CMU Startups on Crunchbase: http://bit.ly/2nowN4F We believe companies with CMU technical DNA have an unfair advantage in the market.
The purpose of this group is to find the best of the best and share these investment opportunities with CMU Alumni (and select friends). Together we can all help these great entrepreneurs succeed and also share in their financial success.
What we look for:
1) Passionate, coachable founder(s) with deep empathy for customers. Lean, Focus, and Hustle.
2) Technology innovation rooted in next technology Epoch.
3) Large and growing addressable market or high-value problem. How does this get exponentially big?
4) Demonstrated early product traction.
4) Plausible "why now?"β answer.
99 Tartans is independent of and not affiliated with the Carnegie Mellon University in any way.

Plucky is a collective of angel investors that backs extremely ambitious founders at the Pre-Seed and Seed stage. In addition to an investment of up to $100K, we bring an engaged network of founders, product experts, and investors.
We invest between $50K-$100K in the same amount of time it takes to talk to a single angel investor. We are a single line item on the cap table. Everything is simpler.
For Founders
Plucky is not a VC firm. There are no GPs or LPs. We invest to support the founders tackling the next generation of problems - thatβs it. We are 100% aligned with founders.
Plucky is not a syndicate. There are no passive investors. We have a variety of backgrounds and experiences such as founders, product experts, and investors. We want to be hands-on.
For Angels
Active and aspiring angel investors can maximise both their impact and learning with Plucky. This is a different type of classroom - there are no teachers with lesson plans, only open-minded students. You submit, evaluate, and invest in real deals. You put your own money in the companies you believe in.
You magnify your impact by being able to support founders as part of a community. Startups benefit from a larger check and a diverse network. This makes the startup more likely to survive, improving its impact on your portfolio. Combined with deal flow and smaller individual checks, you can unlock a more robust risk/return profile.
There are no management fees and no carry fees. We keep interests aligned through collaborative investing and membership curation.
