L'hydrogène apparait comme le vecteur énergétique le plus prometteur pour aller vers des voitures propres et à forte autonomie. Dans cette perspective, la start-up ERGOSUP a développé un procédé innovant de production sous haute pression d’hydrogène sur site permettant le ravitaillement des véhicules à carburant hydrogène. Ce procédé consiste à décomposer l'eau avec de l'électricité selon le principe de l'électrolyse de l'eau. Mais il se différencie des procédés existants par l'usage d'un sel de zinc permettant de réaliser les productions d'oxygène et d'hydrogène, non pas simultanément, mais en 2 étapes successives : c'est l'électrolyse fractionnée. Le procédé ERGOSUP offre les avantages décisifs suivant, en terme - de performance : les hautes pressions d'hydrogène nécessaires au remplissage des réservoirs de véhicules sont fournies directement, - de sécurité : la production d’oxygène est découplée de celle de l’hydrogène, et le stockage gazeux est minimisé, - d’économie : la consommation électrique est ciblée sur des périodes optimales (hors pointes réseau ou disponibilité d'électricité renouvelable intermittente). ERGOSUP, implantée dans la Drôme, développe un procédé innovant de stockage et conversion d’énergie. Lauréate des trois phases du Concours Mondial de l'Innovation, elle est aussi labellisée "Solar Impulse" depuis 2018.
