L'AFG - Association Française de la Gestion financière représente et défend les intérêts des professionnels de la gestion d'actifs. Ses membres sont les sociétés de gestion de portefeuille, entrepreneuriales ou filiales de groupes bancaires et d’assurance françaises et étrangères. Plus de 600 sociétés de gestion de portefeuille exercent leur activité en France. 4 membres de l’AFG se placent parmi les 20 premiers mondiaux. 400 sont des sociétés de gestion entrepreneuriales. Les SGP gèrent 2900 milliards d’euros d’actifs dont 1 500 milliards d’euros en gestion collective (1er rang européen pour la gestion financière de fonds d'investissement). Depuis 2009, l’AFG accueille des “membres correspondants” (plus de 60 à fin 2012) représentatifs de l’écosystème de la gestion : avocats, cabinets de conseil, experts comptables, commissaires aux comptes, SSII, fournisseurs de données ainsi que des représentants de sociétés de gestion étrangères opérant en France. L'industrie française de la gestion dispose d'une gamme très large de fonds - 3 000 UCITS/OPCVM et 9 000 FIA/fonds alternatifs (représentant par leurs actifs 17 % des fonds domiciliés en Europe) et est prête à saisir les opportunités de la directive AIFM (Alternative Investment Funds Managers) qui vient d'être transposée en droit français.
