The École nationale supérieure des Art Décoratifs is a public institution of higher education under the authority of the French Ministry of Culture. Its purpose is to provide high-level artistic, scientific, and technical training for artists and designers, and to conduct research. The Ecole des Arts Décoratifs has been a place of intellectual, creative, and artistic wealth for more than 250 years. It offers studies in 10 departments: Interior Architecture, Art, Animation, Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile and Texture Design, Fashion Design, Printed Image, Photography/ Video, and Stage Design. Attended by 827 French and foreign students the Ecole offers a diploma recognized as a Master's degree. Its research center, EnsadLab, has research groups working in fields of art and design. It conducts interdisciplinary research projects with public and private partners and delivers a PhD - doctoral national diploma through the Sacre (Sciences, Arts, Création, Recherche) programm, in cooperation between six institutes of PSL (Paris Sciences et Lettres), of which the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs is a partner.

Founded in 1982, Les Ateliers-Paris Design Institute (École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle) is the only French national Institute exclusively devoted to industrial design. A public commercial and industrial establishment supervised by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Industry, it broadened its activities to include two other degree programmes in 1985 and 1993: first the Atelier National d’Art Textile (ANAT), then a specialist Master’s degree in “Design and contemporary technology”, the denomination of which has recently been modified. Today the School covers not only the fields of industrial and product design but also multiple contemporary design applications: digital, spatial, communication, service design… For over 25 years Les Ateliers has trained designers with highly varied profiles who have gone on to work in design studios, businesses or as freelancers, many of them contributing to France’s renown abroad.

L'Établissement Public de Coopération Culturelle (EPCC) Cité du design-Ecole supérieure d'art et design regroupe depuis janvier 2010 la Cité du design et l'École supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Étienne, réunies sur un même site : l'ancienne manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne. Porté par la Ville de Saint-Étienne, Saint-Étienne Métropole, la Région Rhône-Alpes et l'État (Ministère de la Culture), il est une plate-forme d'enseignement supérieur, de recherche, de développement économique et de valorisation autour du design et de l'art.
