In March 2019, Alison Rose co-authored the independent ‘Rose Review’ into female entrepreneurship with HM Treasury, which revealed that female-led businesses were underrepresented in high value sectors and that £250 billion could be added to the economy if women started and scaled new businesses at the same rate in the UK as men. A Progress Report was published in March 2020, detailing progress one year on from the original Review. Significant progress has been made in a number of key areas, including: the launch of the Investing in Women Code to boost investment in female entrepreneurs; NatWest’s announcement of £1bn of ring-fenced debt funding for female-led businesses; and access to a banking ‘expert in residence’ being ensured for all 38 UK Local Enterprise Partnerships. We continue to work with partners across the public and private sectors taking forward recommendations and thank you to all the key influencers, entrepreneurs, the Rose Review Board and the Rose Review Council for their ongoing support and insights.

The Invest in Women Taskforce, backed by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), continues the Government’s work to promote and grow the opportunities presented by female entrepreneurship. The Taskforce is industry-led and under the stewardship of two Co-Chairs: multi-exit entrepreneur Debbie Wosskow and Nationwide’s Hannah Bernard, Director of Business Banking. The Taskforce will have a laser focus on funding, with commitment to three core deliverables to drive real change: 1. Launch the world’s largest funding pot £250m for female-powered businesses 2. Increase angel investment for female-powered businesses and encourage more women to become Angel investors. 3. Boost micro-funding, to increase access to finance for women. The Taskforce will sit alongside a newly created Ecosystem Working Group, which will work tirelessly to improve the broader environment for female-powered businesses.
