We are working to establish a regional trauma system in Sri Lanka, preventing deaths and disabilities and creating a template for trauma care in the region. Trauma (defined as wounding due to physical injury) is responsible for over 10% of all deaths in Sri Lanka, a figure which is expected to rise. A trauma system would result in greatly improved responses to mass-trauma events such as the terrorist attacks of Easter Sunday, as well as reductions in mortality from road traffic accidents and other forms of traumatic injury. We are working with McGill University Hospital to develop this system. McGill are amongst the foremost experts on trauma systems, having designed a pioneering trauma system in Canada in the 1990s. The system developed by McGill achieved a fall in mortality from severe trauma from 50% to under 6%, and we aim to replicate these results in Sri Lanka. We have completed an initial site visit to the National Hospital in Colombo, and are in the process of delivering surgical and behavioural training via Zoom due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.
