With the goal of rebuilding education through technology, Mathpresso operates its flagship app, QANDA, an AI-powered learning app that allows students of all levels to receive instant answers and customized learning sources. In 2015, Forbe’s 30 under 30 Asia 2020 honoree Ray Lee first came up with the idea of QANDA during his senior year in college. While he was tutoring to earn money, Lee realized that the quality of education a student receives is greatly based on their location. Lee saw his K-12 students were regularly asking similar questions and realized that these questions are from a pre-selected number of textbooks currently being used in schools. He decided to team up with his high school friend, CEO Jake Lee, to build a platform where by way of using a mobile app to scan and submit questions, students can ask and receive detailed responses. In January 2016, Mathpresso’s first product QANDA was launched. It supported a Q&A feature between students and tutors. In 2017, QANDA introduced an OCR-based search capability that permitted users to search for answers in seconds. Powered by AI technology and user data, QANDA shows the best-matched answer in a text, image, or video-based format. Today, QANDA is used by 14m students monthly in over 50 countries and has achieved a top seat position in 20 countries surpassing similar apps. Over 87% of QANDA’s users are now outside of Korea, with its strongest user bases including Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan. QANDA is one of the fastest-growing K-12 mobile learning apps globally, leading the paradigm shift in education. Since its inception, Mathpresso has raised over US$122 million from investors namely Google, SoftBank Ventures Asia, Legend Capital, GGV, and Goodwater Capital. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Mathpresso has offices in Tokyo, Hanoi, and Jakarta.
