De Sociaal-Economische Raad (SER) adviseert kabinet en parlement over de hoofdlijnen van het te voeren sociaal-economisch beleid. Ook voert de SER bestuurlijke en toezichthoudende taken uit. In de SER werken onafhankelijke kroonleden, werkgevers en werknemers samen.
Oprichting
De SER is in 1950 bij wet opgericht. Het was de tijd van de wederopbouw na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De overheid kon het stimuleren van economische groei, werkgelegenheid en sociale zekerheid slechts waarmaken door het bedrijfsleven (ondernemers en werknemers) blijvend bij het oplossen van deze maatschappelijke vraagstukken te betrekken.
Deze grotere betrokkenheid van ondernemers en werknemers bij het sociaal-economisch beleid is in 1950 vastgelegd in de Wet op de Sociaal-Economische Raad, voorheen Wet op de bedrijfsorganisatie geheten. Met deze wet is de SER opgericht. Via de SER krijgt het bedrijfsleven (ondernemers en werknemers) een adviserende taak.
