The world is seeing a rising allergy epidemic. This increasing prevalence in the Western world is closely linked to our hygienic lifestyle. A reduced exposure to bacteria during infancy delays activation of immunological defense mechanisms that protect from allergies. Dogs have followed in our footsteps over thousands of years, and many of the factors associated with increased allergy in humans is highly significant also for dogs. Allergy is considered one of the major diseases in dogs. It is estimated that over ten percent of all dogs suffer from allergies. In certain breeds, such as Bull Terriers, Boxers, and German Shepherds, the risk is significantly higher. Most common allergic disorders are atopic dermatitis (eczema) and food allergies, requiring life-long symptomatic treatment entailing high costs for the dog owner. Premune is developing a preventive technology that has the potential to change the view on canine allergy treatment. The discovery is based on fifteen years of detailed cohort studies where Premune has identified that infants exposed to a certain bacterial protein in the gut during the first weeks of life are protected from future allergy development. In animal trials the proteins ability to activate immunological tolerance has been confirmed. This product will be given as oral drops to the puppy during the first few weeks of life, in order to activate the immune systems natural defense against allergies.
