Magnetic Resonance Imaging contrast agents are a lifesaving tool used everyday in all MRI scanners. Poor stability of gadolinium contrast agents has caused changes to the way they are used and regulated. The European Medicines Agency has withdrawn marketing authorization for three widely used contrast agents. Shortly after the EMA’s actions, the FDA issued a class warning on top of an existing Black Box warning. Physicians worldwide have shifted to perceived safer, but more expensive contrast agents. To date there has not been a replacement brought to market. Ferric Contrast, Inc. has developed SafeIron, the successor to gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents. Our iron-based MRI contrast agent produces images equal to the gadolinium-based contrast agents used today and removes their inherent toxicity risks. SafeIron is a drop-in replacement working in all MRI scanners and requiring no workflow changes. SafeIron’s functional component can be mined and refined domestically using a significantly cleaner processes than those for the rare earth element gadolinium. SafeIron’s approval will prevent 20,000kgs of gadolinium being released into drinking water sources yearly.
