Embedor is creating solutions for the structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure using wireless smart sensors. Medical personnel routinely perform health screening for the early detection of disease so that appropriate preventive measures can be taken. Health is an important issue not only for our population but also for our nation's civil infrastructure, much of which is rapidly approaching the end of its intended design life. With age comes deterioration. In its most recent report card, the American Society of Civil Engineers cites grimly poor "grades" for almost all infrastructure types: bridges, highways, dams, etc. To make our civil infrastructure safer, we have designed a wireless smart sensor platform and a software framework capable of sensing at multiple scales to facilitate reliable, real-time structural condition assessment for extreme events (earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.), as well as long-term deterioration. Continuous SHM using Internet-connected smart sensors offers an attractive value proposition, the potential to drastically reduce inspection and repair costs, for the owners of large-scale civil infrastructure.
