Since 1997 ECIU (European Consortium of Innovative Universities) has grown into a network of 13 universities. Our collaboration is grounded in expertise in innovative education, research and knowledge exchange. All members are entrepreneurial universities dedicated to the development of an innovative culture in their institutions, and to a catalytic role for innovation in industry and society at large.
We are creating the ECIU University – the ground-breaking educational model where learners and researchers cooperate with cities and businesses to solve real-life challenges.

Our core project is the ECIU University, an EU-funded initiative of the alliance of 12 ECIU universities that creates a completely new educational model on a European scale. The ECIU University is the first European university where learners and researchers cooperate with cities and businesses to solve real-life challenges.
Our innovative university model was launched in November 2019, after it was selected by the European Commission under the pilot call for European Universities. The ECIU University is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
The ECIU University Research Institute for Smart European Regions (SMART-ER) is a research, innovation and education strong alliance, enabling all 12 ECIU University member institutions to jointly address complex societal challenges.
The SMART-ER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme of European Union.
