National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University established the countrys first course in studying computers as early as 1960, and established the Department of Computer and Automated Engineering in 1970. Computer program students of this department specialized in learning knowledge about computers, and developed the first micro-computer of the country in 1971. In 1972, the Department of Control Engineering and the Department of Computer Science were set up. The latter was successively renamed the Department of Computer Engineering, and finally renamed the Department of Computer Science in 1988. With the gradual more detailed subdivision of research in computers, NYCU set up a separate Department of Information Science in 1980, which specialized in the research and education of computer science theory. The two departments have led the development of computer technology in the country since founding, and have created many "NYCU firsts," including the worlds earliest Chinese keyboard, the worlds first automatic stamp recognition system, and the countrys first full optical switch.
