Arbor is a next-generation turbine company using rocket engineering to deliver clean firm power. Power buyers today can wait years for a conventional gas turbine. Arbor is building HALCYON, a 25 MW power system designed to be manufactured quickly, run continuously for decades, and capture its own CO₂. Each unit can run on its own or be combined into plants of 100 MW and more. The design problem is making a system that is both compact and durable. Rocket engines produce very large amounts of power from small machines, though only for minutes at a time, while utility gas turbines run for decades with a much larger footprint. HALCYON uses supercritical CO₂ as its working fluid, which is dense enough that the turbomachinery can match the output of a conventional turbine at roughly one-tenth the size. That compact system then has to survive continuous operation, which depends on the high-temperature materials and cooling designs developed for utility turbines. HALCYON burns fuel in pure oxygen, a process called oxy-combustion. The process eliminates NOx, SOx, and particulate emissions and leaves a pure CO₂ stream that can be stored permanently underground. It also produces water, so a plant can operate without drawing on local supplies. Components are additively manufactured on standard 3D printers, which gives us a route around the supply chains that have left buyers waiting. The work spans turbomachinery, high-temperature materials, combustion, and manufacturing, and our team brings rocket propulsion and utility-scale gas turbine experience to all of it.
